Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005 came into effect on 1st September 2005 and places obligations in regard to health and safety at work on employers and employees. This Act replaces the 1989 Act and ensures Ireland's compliance with European Union law in this area. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act states that places of work shall be arranged to take account of employees with disabilities. Special mention is given to the training of people with disabilities on health and safety issues. It is required that health and safety training provided to employees must take account of their capabilities to take on a particular task. It also refers to the obligation of employers to ensure the provision of health and safety training and materials in alternative formats accessible to people with disabilities. Consideration must also be given to evacuation procedures in the event of an emergency for people with disabilities and that adequate assistance is provided.
