Listed below is just some of the suppliers of special needs or assistive technology available in Ireland. Assistive technology refers to any product that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities or older people.
Assistive technology is a very broad term and can include the very simple to the very complex. Sometimes these technologies are divided into high, medium and low-tech categories:
- 'low-tech' refers to unsophisticated and largely non-electronic devices, such as a laptop stand
- 'medium-tech' devices such as alternative mice or keyboards are more complicated
- high-tech' devices include sophisticated communication and computer control systems which will usually require specialist training and support
