Communication Apps

There is a huge range of communication applications (apps) available for smartphones and tablet devices. These apps help people with communication difficulties to communicate using a combination of symbols, images and text on their mobile devices. Many of the well-established AAC software companies have brought out app versions of their software, so people can move to a smartphone/tablet but keep the communication software they are used to. Due to the sheer number of communication apps available, it is not possible for Assist Ireland to list all of these apps as individual products in this section.

We recommend searching the Apple Apps Store or Android Apps Store to browse the apps available, and if necessary or possible, speak with an occupational therapist or speech and language therapist for advice on what apps might be suitable for you. For more information on communication apps take a look at the Apps for AAC website.

If you are new to this technology and would like to know more about smartphones and apps and how they can help you, we have an Information Sheet Apps for People with Disabilities and Older People which explains what they are and what they can do. There is a section within this document entitled Apps for People with Communication Difficulties that describes and gives examples of communication apps.
