Screenreading Apps

There is a huge range of screenreading applications (apps) available for smartphones and tablet devices. These apps allow you to navigate around your phone without having to see the screen. Some smartphones may already have a screenreader built into the operating system, for example, Apple's VoiceOver or Android’s Talkback. But there are also a number of screenreading apps that you can download to your phone. Due to the sheer number of screenreading apps available, it is not possible for Assist Ireland to list all of these apps as individual products in this section.

We recommend searching the Apple Apps Store or Android Apps Store to browse the apps available, and if necessary or possible, speak with an occupational therapist or speech and language therapist for advice on what apps might be suitable for you.

If you are new to this technology and would like to know more about smartphones and apps and how they can help you, we have an Information Sheet Apps for People with Disabilities and Older People which explains what they are and what they can do. There is a section within this document entitled Screenreading Apps that gives examples of these apps.
