Video Calling Apps

There is a huge range of video calling applications (apps) available for smartphones and tablet devices. Video-calling on a phone can be very helpful for someone with a hearing impairment as it allows the user to see the caller using sign language. Your phone may already have video calling built into its operating system, for example ‘FaceTime’on iOS. Due to the sheer number of video calling apps available, it is not possible for Assist Ireland to list all of these apps as individual products in this section.

We recommend searching the Apple Apps Store or Android Apps Store to browse the apps available, and if necessary or possible, speak with an occupational therapist or speech and language therapist for advice on what apps might be suitable for you.

If you are new to this technology and would like to know more about smartphones and apps and how they can help you, we have an Information Sheet Apps for People with Disabilities and Older People which explains what they are and what they can do. There is a section within this document entitled Video Calling Apps that describes and gives examples of these apps.
